# Split a Team budget between members

Share a Team's monthly budget between its members, and add daily or monthly spending limits for the whole Team.

## Before you begin

- You need the Owner or Admin role, or you manage the Team or a space above it. [Roles and permissions](https://docs.atlas.ilionx.dev/reference/roles-and-permissions.md) lists what each role can do.
- Only Teams can split budgets. Divisions and Units can't.
- The Team already has a monthly budget. If it doesn't, set one first with [Set a space budget](https://docs.atlas.ilionx.dev/guides/admin/budget-and-cost-set-a-space-budget.md).

## Choose how the budget is shared

1. In the sidebar, open **Spaces** and select the Team.
2. Open the **Budget** tab and find **Member Allocations**.
3. Under **Allocation mode**, choose one of:
   - **Pool**: everyone draws from one shared monthly budget.
   - **Fixed**: each member gets a fixed euro amount. The amounts can't add up to more than the Team budget.
   - **Proportion**: the budget is split by percentage. The shares must add up to exactly 100.
4. For **Fixed** or **Proportion**, enter a value for each member. Members without a value are blocked and flagged as unallocated.
5. Select **Save allocations**.

Switching mode discards the existing per-member values. ATLAS asks you to confirm in the **Switch allocation mode?** dialog.

## Set spending limits for the Team

1. In **Spending Limits**, enter a **Daily spending limit**, a **Monthly spending limit**, or both. Each must be greater than zero, and an empty field means no cap.

To freeze a Team, set its monthly budget on the **Budget** tab to 0 instead.

2. Select **Save spending limits**. **Reset** restores the saved values.

These limits cap what the whole Team can spend per day or month, independently of the budget.

## Check how members are doing

Open the **People** tab. The budget column shows each member's utilisation. It uses the normal text colour below 80%, amber from 80%, and red at 100% or more. A dash means no limit, and a blocked member shows no allocation.

## Result

Once a member's share or a Team limit is used up, the gateway refuses that member's requests with a `429` budget error (`402` for Anthropic-compatible clients). Days and months follow the organisation's [business time zone](https://docs.atlas.ilionx.dev/guides/admin/budget-and-cost-business-time-zone-and-statements.md).

## When membership changes

- **Proportion:** removing a member rescales the others so they add up to 100. A new member starts at 0% until you redistribute.
- **Fixed:** removing a member frees their amount. A new member starts at €0 until you allocate.

## Troubleshooting

Look up any code at `https://<atlas-host>/errors/<code>`, where `<atlas-host>` is your ATLAS host. [Errors](https://docs.atlas.ilionx.dev/reference/errors.md) explains how ATLAS reports them.
