# Manage project members

Add people to a project, change their role, or remove them.

## Before you begin

- You need the Owner, Admin or Account Manager role, or you manage this project. [Roles and permissions](https://docs.atlas.ilionx.dev/reference/roles-and-permissions.md) lists what each role can do.
- The project is active. ATLAS refuses adding people or changing roles on an archived project with `ERR-0126`.
- The people you add are organisation members who have signed in at least once.

## Add members

1. Open the project and select the **Members** tab.
2. Select **Add Members**.
3. Search by first name, last name or email. People who aren't yet in the project are listed first.
4. Select up to 100 people and pick one role, **Manager** or **Member**.
5. Select **Add N members**, where N is the number you selected.

The add is all or nothing. If anyone you selected is already in the project, ATLAS adds none (`ERR-0106`). Remove those people from your selection and add again.

## Change a role or remove someone

1. In the **Members** table, open the actions on the person's row.
2. Choose a new role, or choose **Remove** and confirm.

**Result:** a message confirms the change. Removing a member doesn't delete their personal API keys. A key that was acting under this project stays with its owner and loses its acting context.

Unlike spaces, a project has no last-manager protection. You can demote or remove its only manager, and Admins, Owners and Account Managers can still manage the project.

## What the roles can do

A project manager can rename, archive and configure the project, manage its members and keys, and read its statements. A member can read. For more information, see [Roles and access](https://docs.atlas.ilionx.dev/concepts/projects.md#roles-and-access).
